This couldn't have happened to a nicer bunch, and I can't say I'm surprised in the least bit. AA lacks the hub densities of DL and UA, the point-to-point network of WN, or the regional ubiquity of US, and has no international strategy as far as I can tell, other than the recurrent fantasy of merging with either British Airways or JAL. Air Canada: 630
American Airlines: 6,800
Continental Airlines: 3,000
Midwest Airlines: 1,200
Northwest Airlines: 2,500
Delta Air Lines: 2,000
US Airways 1,700
United Airlines: 1,100

Total: ~19,000 jobs in the last two months. Not small.

American is abandoning service to eight airports: Albany, NY; Harrisburg, PA; London-Stansted, UK; Oakland, CA; Providence, RI; San Luis Obispo, CA; Samana, Dominican Republic; and Barranquilla, Colombia.
